Curse of Kaepernick? 49ers Remain Woke, Defiant … And Winless

The San Francisco 49ers weren’t backing down on Sunday as they headed to the nation’s capital (well, technically, to Landover, Maryland) to play the Washington Redskins … a team whose nickname doesn’t seem too controversial in the grand scheme of the things, giving the NFL’s ongoing National Anthem-protest-related suicide.

USA Today reports:

“… six active members of the San Francisco 49ers, and one inactive player, took a knee on Sunday before facing the Washington Redskins.

With a smattering of boos raining down from the stands, wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, linebacker Eli Harold, defensive lineman Arik Armstead, cornerback K’Waun Williams, safety Eric Reid and defensive back Adrian Colbert all took a knee as they continued to protest police brutality against African Americans. One inactive player took a knee with his teammates. The rest of the 49ers all stood during the anthem.

This came a week after roughly 20 49ers players took a knee during the anthem when San Francisco played at Indianapolis. Vice President Mike Pence left the stadium shortly after in what was believed [by some … but USA Today leaves those words out of course] to be a publicity stunt, and President Trump later tweeted that he had instructed Pence to do so.

Reid ranked among the earliest players to join [no-longer-employed Colin] Kaepernick in the protests when the quarterback first initiated them last year. He has taken the lead in San Francisco while remaining vocal on the need for change, even though Kaepernick no longer is on the team. …”

Oh, and by the way, the 49ers lost the game, 26-24, to the Redskins, all of whose players stood for the National Anthem.

That makes the 49ers 0-6 so far this season. They have lost 20 of their last 21 regular-season games (20 of 22 since the Kaepernick National Anthem shenanigans began in the 2016 preseason; they won the season opener), and, going back to Week 2 of the 2015 season, 31 of 37 games.

Currently, the 49ers are tied for for the worst record in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, who also are 0-6. The Browns made the news two weeks ago when members of the team gave a collective “black power salute” during the playing of the National Anthem.

The New York Giants are 0-5. Last week, that team’s star wide receiver, Odell Beckham Jr., sustained a devastating ankle injury which has effectively ended his season … or possibly worse. Beckham, earlier in the season, had given a “black power salute,” and he also celebrated a touchdown by impersonating a urinating dog as some sort of vague message to President Trump.

The 49ers actually came close to winning today’s game, but they blew it in dramatic, bad-karma fashion. 49ers wide receiver Pierre Garçon was penalized for offensive pass interference in the game’s final minute, taking San Francisco out of range of a would-be game-winning field goal.
